High & Medium Voltage Engineer


We are looking for a High & Medium Voltage Engineer for Hoboken.

In this role in the context of the Offshore Division, you are involved in preliminary studies, conceptual design, detailed design and procurement support for the HV and MV systems related to offshore substations.

You realize the design and manage the various aspects related to studies of HV/MV substations. This can be in the context of FEED and engineering studies with a set timeline and deliverables, or on other occasions you act as a subject matter expert supporting the Project Engineering team on EPC projects. Responsibilities include:

  • conceptual design development for substations and interconnections
  • procurement support through specifications and tender files
  • detailed design development and participation in design reviews
  • definition and standardization of calculation tools and templates

The job in details:

  • have or acquire expert knowledge:
    • HV and MV system design (one line, overall and detailed functionalities)
    • power transformers, distribution transformers, auxiliary transformers, earthing transformers and reactors
    • HV and MV Gas Insulated Switchgear
    • HV and MV substations components such as circuit breakers, switches, insulators, capacitors, surge arresters, voltage transformers and current transformers
    • HV and MV cables
    • protection concepts for HV, MV and LV systems, interfaces, interlock systems
  • system studies:
    • act as subject matter expert for the Project Engineering team, including design and interconnection of HV/MV systems and components
    • design electrical Single Line Diagrams
    • dimensioning of HV and MV components
    • review electrical drawing packages and studies related to HV and MV design
    • perform and review calculations pertaining to load flow, short circuit, arc-flash, harmonic, protection and coordination studies
    • perform or coordinate/review selectivity studies
    • perform or coordinate/review electro-magnetic compatibility (EMC) studies and plans
    • dimensioning of earthing, bonding and lightning for substations
    • write technical specifications, tender files, comparison reports, test- and commissioning documents
  • secure project objectives:
    • secure the project objectives by assuring on time and in full delivery of assigned scope of work
    • collect the required input data for calculation and design studies
    • support the projects with the team of engineers in the different fields of expertise
  • continuous improvement:
    • contribute to a learning organization by defining procedures, tools and systems to organize the studies and calculations
    • implement lessons learned into our processes and calculations
    • share your knowledge within the organization by organizing short training sessions
  • internal contacts: Equans Offshore departments and other divisions within Equans
  • external contacts: clients, partners, suppliers

Your talents?

  • university level degree, master of science in engineering (mechanical/electrical/electromechanical)
  • relevant experience in the high voltage engineering
  • knowledge of and experience with the following specific systems is required:
    • HV en MV GIS
    • power transformers
    • auxiliary/earthing transformers
    • shunt reactors
    • HV and MV cables incl. accessories & testing
  • experience with Eplan and Caneco HT or other relevant HV/MV calculation software is required
  • experience with grid studies is considered a plus
  • knowledge of HVDC is an advantage
  • preferably knowledge of and experience in the offshore wind industry
  • preferably knowledge of and experience in grid operations
  • analytical skills and written communication are your strong points
  • able to structure and prioritize your own work
  • able to work under set time frame 
  • able to manage good relationships with the project management team, the client and our partners while monitoring Equans’ interests  
  • it is possible that short missions abroad could apply for meetings with clients or vendors
  • strong communication skills: professional working knowledge of English. Dutch is an advantage but not mandatory. Knowledge of French and/or German is an added value
